What seduced you into programming?

What made you start programming? I remember picking up a webtv internet terminal box before I was out of school. About the second night on it, I was using HTML in email-signatures. And it went from there, untill here I am today a bit more advanced.

How about every one else? What got you into doing the thing you so much enjoy doing?

I saved forever to buy a then $200 calculator, because I thought 3d graphs were the shiznit. I started programming small 'basic' programs and games on it, and then moved on to the Z80 abilities and assembly.

Now, 6 years later, here I am. Only now I use C, Perl, Php, ASP, VB, Tck/Tk, and a little Java when required. ( I still have the Ti-85, as kind of a involuntary memento.

When I was about 8, I was fasinated with the brand new Sinclairs ZX Spectrum and its whopping 48K memory, I got a few books out the library and they had source code for games like packman. So after spending 2 days typing it in, I started wrinting my own programs. That was all good for a few years, until the Amiga came out. I looked at Amiga Basic and hatted it, didnt touch programming untill the web was getting big (1995).

Anyone remeber the old Specrum rubber keyboards ?, when you program you have to use something like 'Ctrl & t' to get the 'goto' command, you cant just type the code in.

Back in the 80's, I started using BASIC on an ATARI 800, 1200, Comadore PET and 64.
Totally lost interest for about 10 years.
Got on the net in '93 and fell in love. Learned HTML and eventually got totally frustrated that I couldn't pass vars across pages. Stated a site, learned PHP/mySQL about 2 years ago and been going strong ever since.

Sounds like some of us was born to code 😃

I remember when I was very young, looking at my first line of Binary code, I was thrilled. However I didn't get into it untill years later. I think a lot of us worked with binary one time or another??

Personally what got me into programming was I saw a computer and wondered what made it work. Then I learned it was the programs that let you do stuff. So I looked at Microsoft word and some other programs and said what makes these work. Then I asked my uncle and he is a programmer and told me so that is when I found the passion. And here I am now 16 and I can use VB HTML Java2 and PHP and currently trying to learn C++ man I love this stuff 🙂

I have just always loved computers since I got my first when I was 14. I wanted to do something with it and was intrigued with the idea of making my own programs.

It has been 3 years and I now know HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Flash/ActionScript, Delphi, Visual C++, Assembly, PHP, MySQL, ASP, Visual Basic, VBScript, and Java.

I am also a graphic designer. I use 3ds max 5, Paint Shop Pro 7, Photoshop 7, and Illustrator 10. Some of my work can be seen at: http://cdbsi.deviantart.com/gallery

I am 17 now and a senior in high school. I am one of the six creators of ATComm which you will probably hear a lot about in the near future. Currently we have over 50 employees.

Computers are my passion and I hope that everyone can experience the art of developing. I have worked very hard on developing my skills.

Hmm, when I was 10 (7 years ago) I went to the library and saw an internet computer. They just got it a few weeks ago at that point, and just started surfing. After a few weeks I wonderd how webpages were made, and started to investigate HTML. I would write all the codes I learnt from view -> source down on little pieces of paper and store them in my pocket for every time I went to the library (every day). After about a month I had a HUGE wad of paper with tons of code ;p

I remember when I couldnt figure out why a link wouldnt work because I spelled it "a herf", hehe.

Took me another year until I got my own access at my house, from there my skills developed into SHTML, then CGI, graphics at some point there. Then into other languages like C and scripting (like mirc). Then I picked up PHP about a year and a half ago because my friend was making an online game out of it.

Thats my history in a nut shell o.o

i program for the women..god, there isnt a night that goes by when i dont get laid for knowing how to program. i have my first little parse error on its way 😃

i actually started as a little punk on aol.. somehow i got into making aol 'progs' (haha oh boy, good times) in VB with api and shit.. i got good, but i managed to get my families aol account terminated somehow, and from there i moved into more 'useful' vb progs like my own editors n such. but then i learned its more fun to express yourself online to millions of anon people than write a shitty vb program that sits on your desktop and makes you angry

programming makes me feel better than my friends, bottom line.

Back in the day, learned basic because it was fun to make choose your own adventure games
Later, i thought Flash3 was cool (and i still have my hair) but I wanted more power to control the content. So that lead into server-side stuff. I still do a lot of Flash, but I've also added ASP and PHP to the prerequisite HTML, XHTML, and ECMAScripts (JavaScript, ActionScript)
Now i'll learn just about anything if it'll help me keep my job 🙂

I also do it for the girls 🙂
There is nothing that my wife likes more than to hear me go on and on about programming! 😉

Oh yea, I forgot about that. I don't do HTML anymore, it replaced its self with XHTML just incase it becomes usefull any time in the future :p

So, forgive me for asking but.. what exactly is 'xhtml' and how does it differ from html? And, is it worth knowing?

but programming helps you get girls in other ways.. tell me you cant basically read a girls mind? once you get into programming, your mind turns into a language- and you learn to read body language really good 😃 at least in my case anyways..

speaking of which, i have to write a paper for school on how my brain acts like a computer.. only its giving me a parse error on cell 2,142,905 :rolleyes: damn brain

XHTML is html, with more rules. For example, everything has to be in lower case. And everything that doesn't have a close tag has to end in />

For example:

<img src="image.gif" alt="image" />

Thats about it, its usefull.. umm, well. I dunno, but I know I use it.. http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/

I here you broken I can do the same my mind goes at 100,000 rpm all day even while I sit in highschool hitory I am thinking how can I make my code better lol:p as for the girl thing lol I can read body language real good and my mind can process when a girl is going to swing a slap so I can duck 😉

Oh hell I used it and didn't even realize I was using it lol Xhtml lol is so much like html.

Oh and Xhtml you must use all CSS non of html's style atributes.
