PHP 4.2.2 vs 4.2.3

I principally code with Xoops...The Xoops team say Xoops is unstable with the 4.2.3 so they say use 4.2.2

I'm curious if maybe someone could explain a possible reason for instability issues. You don't have to go into great detail.

My system requirements are almost pushing me to the later PHP, but I've got site support on these Xoops sites.
