GD Library

I wish to experiment with some PHP scripts that will allow me to resize/compress images (PNG, JPG formats mostly). All scripts that I have seen require GD Library 2.0

My question is what, why, how and when?

No seriously, what is it that I would need to satisfy this requirement of the script(s)?

GD is a compile-time option for PHP, and can't be modified without recompiling. If you're sure that you don't already have GD support compiled in, you can look for pre-compiled binaries for your system that include GD support, or recompile from sources, making sure you run configure with the --with-gd argument, or --with-gd=[path to your gd installation] if configure can't find gd. Of course, you need to actually have the GD library installed if you're compiling from source: See http://www.boutell.com/gd/ if you don't.
