Convert linebreaks from textarea to a database

Hello,

I would like to know how can i keep the linebreaks when i enter a text from a textarea into the databse.

In ASP there is the vbcrlf, and i used this line:
replace(st,vbcrlf,"<br>" & vbcrlf)

How can i do the same in php?

Maybe try [MAN]nl2br[/MAN] which will convert new line to <br>
