Roleplaying - Buffy

Hi guys,

As you may or may not know, Buffy season 7 has started on UPN, and I fear as do many that this will be the last season. I play in a Buffy PBeM RPG on yahoo groups (aggghh lol). I hope to create a roleplaying engine in php, but I am hardly experienced enough to do it on my own, and if I did try and do it on my own I'd never get it done before Buffy ended!

I would like to do it to pay tribute to the show that I have watched for the past 7 years since it graced the television, are there any other fans present that would be willing to participate in the project? This must be a free project because I don't have the thousands probably required to get the help I need.

C'mon people, if you are a true Buffy fan you gotta do it to make sure it stays alive and doesnt die when the show does!

I have not seen season 7 yet, considering that I am in the UK. But I am wondering what kind of thing that u might b considering?

A roleplay engine,

You sign up by filling in your character details (if its a made up one) if a regular cast character is available, u will b able to select which one you want, once logged in you can post your part of the story, the story being organised into seasons and episodes, the name of the poster will be clickable which will take a user to that players character profile, text will be coloured according to context, i.e; actions in red, speech in blue, or whatever, like bbcode... Other details like that, which I haven't figured out yet but it's going to be a specialised roleplaying engine for buffy and hopefully angel, basically the engine could be designed to accomondate a generic functionality which could be ported to multiple scenarios, dark angel, charmed etc etc.

I think a forum mod could probably do for it, but I'd rather have it completely tailored.

And btw: I am from the UK, have you not heard of a little program called kazaa? You can download the episodes, thats how I'm watching season 7 =]

LOL, I have. But I only have got a 56 KB modem. 🙁

And when u say total tailored, do u mean having a basic message board coding and total change it to how you want to use it? (I have done that with a couple of my websites in the past). As they had the basic features that I wanted but not all of the features, or it as had some features of which I wanted but it hadn't got it fully how I wanted and all I did was to change or add to the coding to have it how I wanted it.

But once u have got the message board changed and up and running to can start to get people to come to your website while u design and build ur own version of the RP engine. As this would take a bit more time to do but with the converted message board you have got a head start as u know what features u need and also a possible way to code it up. 🙂 And also able to let u get a small team of tests together to try out the new RP engine and sort out any bugs.

As I have just started to code up my own message board from scratch, and to make it slightly different to other message boards. I am planning to design and code it more for RPG then just a normal run of the day board.

And something of which we could do is to develop it in to the Buffy RPG site and also release a version of the board that other people can use, but not extactly the same as the website version.

How skilled are you in php and databases? I am only quite basic, but the ideas form in my head =]

Yes that will b very easy to do, as what I am planning with my board is to make the RP part the major feature of it, but also have the option of making a forum either a RP or a normal chat one. But the option will b a simple check box and the coding will do the rest. But that is something of which we could do in later versions of the boards.

I am about a intemedaite in PHP and basic knowledge of php, but my coding knowledge is very good as I was taught basic coding knowledge when I was at college/uni and I am self taught in PHP and am always learning.

But with mysql, I know the basics of that. As that is all what u would need to know about mysql. As all of the stuff is done with php and u would use some simple querys to get the information from the mysql.

But with me, I am more of a coder then the ideas man unless the ideas is to do with the back end of the site. (PHP and mysql and how to contact it to the front end of the site) then I am pretty good with that.

I am learning php, I've written some basic stuff, feedback forms, a redirection script based on cookie set from selection, things like that, I am currently studying a HNC in Computing and eventually I will get through to database design, most of the course relates to business type stuff, so we'll be doing relational databases and stuff eeeks lol.

Anyways I'll be a little busy this week, I'll contact you sometime this week, then we can discuss what I have envisioned =]
