Execute Software on Server using PHP

Is it possible to execute software on the server using PHP.

Our FTP daemon keeps dying, and having to be restarted. Is it possible to set up a php script to restart the daemon from the Internet?

just giving some alternatives... 😃 you know, that executing server commands via web can be a serious security hole...

why not a shell script hanging by a cron job, just to, periodically, check the status of the ftp daemon?
why not a "new" ftp daemon - one that does not die?
