I have been playing around, and working slightly on this project on and off for about 6 months. I want to put a top of the line system inside a desk. I'd like to run two cd-rom drives facing up with A flat screen monitor.

I was going to make the CPU case out of plexy-glass, however I was unsure of reliability of the case. Anyone have any ideas on the safest way to go about doing this? The only issue with the case is the size, which is why I needed it to be square (more or less). And the cd-rom drives. Are there any that will face vertically and that don’t have a drawer? I wanted one that would simply let the cd slide in and out. Like car stereos.

It's going to be an enjoyable project to work on, perhaps run neon wires.. not quite sure yet.

I was considering a custom case till my dad mentioned that those materials are a conductor to static electricity.

I've gotten the shock of my life (well... in the top 10 anyway) sliding down a giant plexi-glass slide in Wheaton, MD.

Why not weld a metal case yourself? That'd be super cool.
Sheet metal is cheap, and I think they'll bend it for cheap, too.

I thought about doing a metal case, however it would have to be well vented, and well coolled. I'm in south texas, it's not uncommon for the heat temp. to rise above 115. Even with my large ac in the computer room, 115 outside, in a metal case inside an wooden enclosed area? the cpu would have to be water coolled chuckles

Perhaps a thin peice of sheet metal, well ventilated? And an exta fan?

yeah, it doesn't have to be thick at all...
I've got a case that has 3 fans in it, besides the CPU cooler fan

it can be very thin, which I think will make it easier to weld (although I don't know a thing about welding).

what about glass? there are several types that arent brittle, and i dont mean plexiglass

You can indeed use plexiglass to make your case. I've seen several ppl use it to make a really, really compact boxes for taking to lan parties. Also, (sorry no link) there is a site that sells plexiglass cases, primarily marketed at teacher types.
