is this possible (table of mysql results/count)

From a mySQL database, I am trying to get a listing of DISTINCT categorys

eg News, Gigs, Updates, etc

The results I wanted are as below

News (34)
Gigs (123)
Updates (343)

Where the name is the DISTINCT category and the number is the number of entries that belong to each distinct category.

I would also like them to be formatted into nice table with each category and number contained in its own cell.

Is this possible and if so can anyone help?

without knowing your table structure, this is an example:

select category, count(*) from table_name group by category
