How to SQL query?

two simple questions both relating to the same query.

Firstly, how do I search through multiple columns in the same table . to display my results?

eg...

SELECT * FROM table WHERE column1, column2, column3
LIKE ' %variable%'

seconly , how can I make mySql DB searchs more consistent

eg.. case - insensitive.
search either one or more words in the same query, in an
unformated way.

... hope all makes sense

To search in multiple columns

SELECT * 
FROM t
WHERE column1 LIKE ' %variable%' 
        or column2 LIKE ' %variable%' 
        or column3 LIKE ' %variable%'

case insensitive search

select *
   from t
  where cast(column1 as binary) = 'Lambo'

Thanks for the help. Search working much better but the only problems is that, how do you incorprate both ...what Ive done

SELECT * FROM table
WHERE cast(column1 as binary) LIKE '%$strWords%'
OR cast(column2 as binary) LIKE '%$vars%'
OR cast(column3 as binary) LIKE '%$var%'

but get the following error:

Error 1064 :
You have an error in your SQL syntax near '(column1 as binary) = '%var%'' at line 2

Getting the following error :

SELECT * FROM table
WHERE cast(column1 as binary) LIKE '%$strWords%'
OR cast(column2 as binary) LIKE '%$vars%'
OR cast(column3 as binary) LIKE '%$var%'

but get the following error:

Error 1064 :
You have an error in your SQL syntax near '(column1 as binary) = '%var%'' at line 2

I need to get my search to be case - insensetive

There must be some out there that can help me!

WHERE UPPER(column1) LIKE '%".strtoupper($strWords)."%' "
