GD library problems...

ok... i am with a host who just upgraded to php 4.2.3 which caused the gd lib not to work anymore - after 5 days of discussion they downgraded back to 4.2.2 and not the gd lib works again... the only problem there is now is, that if an uploaded picture gets resized for example it looks like an image filter was applied on it - it looks really crappy - like on a 16 color screen this definitely wasnt like that before - and my provider says it should be ok, cos everything is set as it was used to. well - im sure it isnt... some examples:

the last one is one of those extremely shitty examples... so...

since i dont know too much about the gd lib installations, does anybody of the server gurus here have an idea, whatcould be wrong?

I was having similar difficulties, until I found a post where someone sugested using ImageCreateTrueColor instead of ImageCreate. After that, everything was being resized with good quality.

My code looks like this:

$Thumb = ImageCreateTrueColor ($ThumbWidth, $ThumbHeight);
ImageCopyResampled ($Thumb, $TmpPhoto, 0, 0, 0, 0, $ThumbWidth, $ThumbHeight, imagesx ($TmpPhoto), imagesy ($TmpPhoto));

Yea, that's close to the reaction I had when it worked for me. I think I may have even done a cartwheel.

wati wonder though: why did thy change that? and what version did that start with?

I have no idea. When I first started messing around with images, I gave up with GD2 because I kept getting grey images from it, and switched to ImageMagick... It was a horrible idea, but it worked. The lag image magick made though was too much, so I was ecstatic when I discovered the true color option and it worked. My site can process 100 images in 5 secs with GD2 while the image magick method took several minutes to process 70 images.

It's pretty broken right now. Rather than doing everything the working yet wrong way, I'm going back through it and trying to do everything the right way.

I'm wondering if anyone can help me install gd 2.0. I'm using Windows XP and have located the php_gd.dll in my Windows/system32/ directory. Do I just replace the dll? is that all I have to do?

Here are the warnings I receive:
