displaying contents of a dir

i want to be able to display contents(i.e. images) of certain directories without having to do all the html and stuff for it. i was wondering if anyone can tell me how thtas done....i know it can be done but i dont know how.

This is how I did it but their has to be an easier way.

Not all of what is enclosed is PHP alot is html but it works. For displaying 2 random pictures from a directory.
