New Project Need Help

I started with php about 2 months ago and I was looking at getting in to an open source project of some kind like a portal or a bbs or something. I need suggestions. I can host everything on my sites. nwstudio.com, gamexnetwork.com I just need help with a project so i can learn PHP and MySQL better.

well.. depends on how good you are...
some issues with bbs(forums) you can make a basic one, or you can try for the VBulletin Approach..

Me personally.. I took the VBulletin Approach..

Not really that hard..

I took steps like this
1) get categories and forums made
2)show posts in forums
3)make a post
4)add replies

and so eventually getting me a week later.. With A management system that uses cookies and sessions, pms, search functions...
a few more tid bits are needed.. but my guess 2months arent much to get that good.. id go for the more simpler approach of users, forums, add,posts etc

Well if you have done programming before do something complex like a game or BBS but otherwise try simple things like a mailing list or a news BLOG.

another idea is to get a thing you made when you were just starting off and improve it.. Eg. Maybe i donno you may have made a news system..

From there you may wanna add things or make the code smaller... and make it portable..
