Hi,
I personally would blatt the machine and install a half-decent Windows O/S like XP or 2000 or even better, convert to Unix/Linux 😉
However, I have come across some of the same problems you are experiencing in the past, when I used Win98. So here are my thoughts/advice on what to do - you can choose to follow these or reject them, that's up to you. But I do not take any responsibility for any problems that may occur due to this 🙂
Answer to question 1:
Windows is not shutting down because you have another process running that is not exiting properly causing Windows to stay up until that process is terminated. Are you running anything in the system tray? Try killing all processes running using task manager (CRTL/ALT/DEL) then shutting down.
Answer to question 2:
You are getting this error because you are running Microsoft Networking, which is configured to connect to a PDC - when one is not available. Simply remove Client for Microsoft Networking from Control Panel/Network, and reboot, then go back into Control Panel/Network and Add Client for Microsoft Networking, then reboot. When prompted for a username/pwd, type in your logon name and leave pwd blank then click OK - you should now not be prompted for a password again.
Answer to question 3:
There is no answer that I know for this one. I have seen it happen before under Windows 98 and I never found a fix - all I did to fix it in the end was reinstall.
Answer to question 4:
Simple fix for this one - stop using AOL 😉 No, seriously, this is due to not having inline > switched on in your mail client. Is the AOL mail client Microsoft Outlook Express? If so, go to Tools, Options and click on Send, then click on Plain Text Settings and tick "Indent the original text with > when replying or forwarding".
