I download a snapshot of an app, like OSCommerce, from SourceForge and it has a bunch of cvs folders in it. I understand (basically) what CVS is for, but if I plan on using the code for a site would I delete all the cvs stuff in it? Isn't that just for use when I get to a point where I am contributing my own code to the project? Can anyone tell me what the information in those cvs folders is for and what use I would have for it in a production site? Would it be helpful in anyway when I want to update the code later?

I have a tendancy to try to understand too much new stuff at one time :eek:. I appreciate any input you might have!

CVS is a beautful thing. You understand that it is a versioning system, right? Well, a lot of the features (version numbers and archives) are stored in the CVS folders. So, yes, you can safely delete the CVS folders so long as you are not contributing anything to the project.

Excellent, thanks. Yes, I have read the "beginners" material on CVS and I think the whole concept is great. I assume that if I was working on a copy that I "checked out" as a contributor then all that information would be very important. I would like to do that when I have enough knowledge to give back. Right now it's all input 😃.
