Shortened MySQL field

How do I shorten data to e.g. 100 characters

If I use:
SELECT id, title, content FROM news
and then use the echo command I can show the title and content...

but how could I display the title and only the first 100 CHARACTERS of the CONTENT ?

Hope this makes sense, I'm sure there is a simple explanation... many thanks...

Just use the substr function, something like
echo substr($content,0,100);
