image making help please

I am making a maths type page and i need to make small images for fractions.
I can get normal strings working, but I need to know how to put in indexes, square roots and other symbols in the fraction.

The numerator and denominator are entered by the user...

Does anybody know how i can do this?

Example
(x³ + 3) / squareroot( pi - 1 )

would solve all my problems.
