I have not used it extensively, but it seems to be pretty good so far. There are certain caveats, but I think it will largely depend on what type of coding you will be doing. Keeping the online PHP manual at the ready would probably be a good thing.
As for affording it to customers...what? Not sure what you mean...we offer it to our customers at my company.
