i am really pissed off now... is our admin a beginner, me, or MySQL is shi*. which i dont really believe.
okay, i have a DB with a large table with 3.8 mio records, 800MB in total [table]. website receives lots of hits.
i found out it would be good to add another index to the table. i tried to create index and soon the whole website went down saying "it cant connect to MySQL".
admin said this happens because MySQL is trying to create indexes and it puts 100% effort into it, resulting in slower response to other queries which stay in the queque [connections] and soon there are no connections left.
my question is: how can i create a new index now when the DB is alive and table is over 800MB without turning off the whole website? is it possible to tell mysql not to use all the resources for index creation because i can wait for 5 hours and i dont need to be done in 10 min! i would rather spend 5 hours and have a website running than 10 min with website down.
