sending mail takes forever

Hi everyone,

I have RedHat 7.0 with PHP4.2.1 and apache_1.3.20.
I have sending mail function on my php page.
It takes forever to upload the page.
I know it succeed because I received the email.
But why is it taking such a long time?
Is there any solution for this instead of upgrading to the newest sendmail program? I'm afraid there might be conflict with other files during the upgrade process.

It's not just Linux and Apache. I'm running PWS on WinNT and mail() also takes an inordinately long time.
