Subdomains

I have noticed that some sites have subdomains that they couldn't possibly have the time to register individually, such as www.isgay.com (as much as I hate that site, it does exactly what I am talking about) and www.deviantart.com which gives a subdomain url to all its users, such as user.deviantart.com. Isgay.com has a scripted prank that inserts code into a fake newspaper article describing acts of homosexuality using the subdomain, so if you put firstname.lastname.isgay.com it would say at the top "Firstname Lastname Found Guilty of Flagrant Homosexuality" or something like that. Again, I am totally against the bashing of homosexuals, it is just as bad as bashing one particular race, and isgay.com is just an example. Anyway, I was wondering: How do you do this? Do you use PHP? I noticed deviantart uses mostly PHP on their pages, but I never knew PHP could do things that powerful.

I should say: The answer was not very difficult, now was it? It took more time to write the code, then to think it up! (And find $HTTP_HOST of course)
