php pages return a 404 error?

Hi there...i'm working on installing php 4.2.3 with Apache 2.0.43 on my Win2k machine.

I have a couple goofy things going on, I hope one of you can help me.

1) if I type in "localhost" in my webbrowser I get a Page Not Found. I end up having to type in the the IP addy to get to the page....but it just loads up a directory of files, not the index.html page that I have in the /htdocs folder. If I type IP addy/index.html, then I can see the page. What's even wierder is that the files that do show up in the directory aren't even in the /htdocs directory.

2) whenever I try to view a page with a .php extension, I get a 404 error on my web-browser, and the following line shows up in the Apache Error log:

[error] [client 169.254.186.100] File does not exist: C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs/PHP

That IP addy isn't even the addy of the machine with the Apache Server on it. I find this wierd. That's the addy for my proxy server.

I don't get it.

I hope somebody can help me, I'd really like to get working on PHP from home.

Ok....I figured out the "localhost" part. It was a setting that I needed to change in IE. We're cool there.

But, I'm still having trouble with my php pages.

In your httpd file do the following (you didn't read the instructions did ya...) :eek:

1) Add "index.php" so that Apache finds it by default.

DirectoryIndex index.php index.html index.html.var

2) Add php to the script alias field
ScriptAlias /php/ "c:/php/"

Hey Kerry....I actually did read the instructions, directions, manuals....probably 3 or 4 of them. So...I've already done what you suggested. I think somewhere along the way I have some mixed messages...so I'm going to start over.

Dammit. Thanks for the help though. I do appreciated the response.

Well...I uninstalled...then re-read the directions...and installed it again. PHP is now working.
