regex shortcuts in 4.2

Ok, I'm a bit new, so forgive me if this has been discussed already.

I recently spent two weeks tracking down a bug that crippled my site when I uploaded it - the bug was that \W in a regular expression worked fine on my version (4.06 on Apache, Mandrake Linux) but had no effect on the ISP server, running 4.2 on Apache and FreeBSD.

Were these shortcuts depreciated with 4.2?

No, they're part of the widely-used PCRE language that PHP happens to use. It's not really up to PHP to deprecate them.
