How many characters?

I'm using flat files to store some non-important data, and when I get the data out of these flat files, I use file() function to read the data into arrays. Here is the question:
How many characters can be stored in one row?

I'm not sure if the number of characters exceed the max limit (if there is a limit), it'll automatically return a new line (such as when you open a txt file with Windows' notepad if the number of characters exceeds 1024 characters). 😕

I have sucessfully tested 4.2.3 with strings around one page. (~64k.)

When I use GZFILE, the files are sometimes as large as a few meg. The only limititation is the 8mb memory limitation.
