Hi guys

Just wondering if anyone could recommend me a freeware PHP editor. I don't expect syntax checking for free but just some coloring and layout features would be nice.

Cheers,

      try the search button

      try to type

      php editors..

      omg.....

what a results... so many... unbelievable.. didn't knew there was a search option.. woooooow

Shadeless... my guess is that most people know how to do a search. The great thing about asking about them in a forum is that you can ask real people their actual opinions on different editors, rather than letting a bot list a bunch of crap.

demonic, I use UltraEdit, myself. I have been experimenting a little with Dev-PHP, which seems to be a pretty good product, but a little difficult to get used to. For example, Ctrl-S does a syntax check instead of Save (!!!).

UltraEdit is good because it has syntax highlighting for many different languages, including HTML, Visual Basic, C++, etc. You can download syntax highlighting rules for other languages as well, such as XML and PHP/HTML. A feature I like is match bracing. It's also a great HEX editor, if you have any need for that sort of thing.

As I said, Dev-PHP is pretty good, too, but I don't know a lot about it just yet. I do like that it has syntax checking, but from what some people have said, it doesn't have regular expression searching. I don't know how important that is to you, but check it out and see if you like it.

Hope that helps in your search! There are a few other threads coving this topic, as well. Be sure to check them out for other opinions. Good Luck!

UltraEdit is the best in my opinion, cause it gives syntx coloring and does auto indents on if/functions/loops, etc to make debugging much easier.

my personal fav. its free , small, and has color! What more could you ask for. And the smart@SS who said something about searching is a flagrant moron. I am sure he/she already did that and wanted to get some intelligent opinions.... too bad yours didn't come anywhere near that.

buzzly why asking the same question if there alrdy is a thread running about it. so dun fuckin point me out that asking the same question is an ok thing.

You weren't very clear about that Shadeless... you just said, basically, "do a search." There is no need to be rude about things 🙂

ok ur right, sorry but it is early, and i dun find it funny it that people ask same questions while others alrdy putted so much effored in answering in an other active thread..and i seen same question alot of times past week.. because people just dun look further.

I mean this isn't an code question, i can imagine it with code questions ot something... but not with a "simple" question" about php editor.

the link to the other thread, alrdy many answers given there.. but heck..

I'm a big fan of Textpad (http://www.textpad.com). It's not free, but there's nothing physically stopping you from using it either. Very solid editor with syntax highlighting and a number of other nifty features.

                      I like HTML-Kit from:
                      http://www.chami.com/html-kit/

Has syntax highlighting for many languages and help with parameters for HTML tags etc - and has loads of third party plug ins which extend it including many for PHP.

                      And it is free.

                      Cheers,

                      Mike
