PHP Programming Techniques

Can anyone direct me to an article that will show me how to design sites using PHP. I know how to program in PHP but I am not sure about the best technique. For example, some people make the site as functions such as Header, Body, Footer and Side. The Header function will take care of the top graphics and menu of the site. The Body function will take care of the make body of the site, etc.

technique may vary dependent on application, setting, etc. and preference.

using footers, headers imo can be very helpful when making updates, however one thing to consider is SEO. Spiders may not find all your site if they can't crawl the page.
