displaying numerical values

I'm sure this a basic question, but I never did it before and couldn't find it the php manual (couldn't figure out exactly what to search for).

I have $number=15976;

how do I make it echo $number with the comma for the proer placements?
15,976

and in case $number is a lot larger also like 1,967,562

use the number_format() function:

echo number_format($number)
