displaying line breaks from database

i have a databse in which one of the fields has a lot of text normaly. This text has line breaks, but when i dsiplay them they don't appear, but on phpmyadmin they do. what is the command for this?

for example I insert

hello,
how are you?

and i get:
hello, how are you?

but phpmyadmin displays:
hello,
how are you?

the field is a text field.

Use [man]nl2br[/man].

Browsers ignore line breaks so you need <br> tags
