Possible to set vars. by going out of PHP?

What I want to do is something like this:

<?php

$content =
?>
content string bla bla
<?php
;
?>

Of course I could use this:

<?php
$content = <<<CONTENT
content string
CONTENT;
?>

But I would rather do something like the first one, however I can't seem to figure out how I can do it. I think it is rather simple but can PHP do it?

Yes, it's a very simple question. And it can be answered simply by trying it. Did you try it? Did it work?

And, as PyroX says: why would you want to?

The reason I would like to do this is because I want to have a long string of HTML code set as a variable so that I can print that later on. Basically I want to go out of PHP code so that I can easily edit my HTML code with Dreamweaver. The whole thing is pretty complex, and yes I tried doing this:

<?php
$content =
?>
content string bla bla
<?php
;
?>

But it doesn't work or I wouldn't have posted this. I was wondering if anyone else knew how to do a similar thing but with some kind of code that would actually work.

Well, think about it: "I want to get out of PHP mode and put the HTML into a PHP variable" - if you're out of PHP mode, then PHP doesn't get to see the HTML does it, so how's it supposed to go into a variable?

PHP's operation could be mangled at the source-code level to achieve this, but it seems like an excessive answer to just placate people whose editors won't let them cut and paste.

PHP will do a lot of things, but it won't compensate for your lazyness.

I am not lazy and I have fairly good skills please don't bash me and stuff just because I want to learn PHP better and be more efficient in the operations. The word "lazyness" could be applied to many tasks -- whenever you try to make something simplier or faster you could be accused of lazyness.

Thanks for you help I have worked out a way that is almost as fast/easy as my request.

Hey, its not about being nice, I was just stating my opinion. :rolleyes:

I think that people who use frontpage or dreamweaver or grandma's html editor are either lazy, or lack enough knowledge to write the html for themselves. I tend to thing the latter is true because it shows that they are satisfied with bloated code.

But its just my opinion, so don't take it personal. Latley people have been pissing me off, trying to learn php and other languages when they lack the basic set of logic skills and proramming know-how to do anything on their own.

I started out in the beginning, way back when it was not used by the masses. I did not have these nice forums to consult every time I needed someone to find the ; I left out. Have you memorized most of the functions? Do you know fundamental programming logic? Is so then your a good guy, welcome to the community, otherwise get the hell out before you hurt somebody.

Like I said, its my OPINION, and I live here in the great USA, where I have a right to state it.

If you can't do it with pencil and paper, you can't do it 🙂 But then, on one or two occasions I've had to use a cellphone...

Which would you prefer: brusque and accurate, or sugary and useless?
