How to recompile?

Hi, This is obviously a very basic question but I haven't found the answer after a day of searching several PHP related sites.

All I need to do is recompile PHP - with the following configuration:

export EAPI_MM
./configure \
--with-apxs=/hsphere/shared/apache/bin/apxs \
--with-zlib-dir \
--with-mhash=/root/mhash-0.8.17 \
--with-jpeg-dir \
--with-png-dir \
--with-gd=/hsphere/shared \
--with-mysql=/usr \
--with-gettext \
--disable-debug \
--enable-versioning \
--enable-sockets \
--enable-track-vars \
--with-imap=/hsphere/shared \
--with-pgsql=/usr \
--enable-ftp \
--localstatedir=/var/hsphere/php

This is on a redhat 7.1 box. What do I do to recompile? Thanks for any assistance you are willing to offer.

Did you install via an RPM, or download a tarball, unzip, config, make, etc??

It was pre-installed on my server when I got it - I'm adding mhash.

I know it's a basic question, but I've never re-compiled with such a long list of options. Do I have to type them all in one line, or does the backslash allow me to enter multiple lines from the command prompt before it starts the process of recompiling?

Well, it works in the Makefile, so it ought to on the command line. I'm not totally sure on that, though. I've always been in the habit of just typing 'til I was done. With the history & completion capabilities of the modern shells, this isn't a problem for me (I use tcsh, and can edit anything on the command line, you can in bash, too, can't you?).

I guess the trick is knowing WHERE to call the commands....

If you can find the PHP source, go there and then

Set the environment (the VAR=whatever and export stuff);

$./configure --with-long-list-of-options-and=/their/paths

$make

$make install

....should about take care of it. Disclaimer, using "make" is always a learning experience, as you're learning.

If it came preinstalled on your system you might not be able to recompile it unless the source was installed as well.

I typically follow these sequence of commands when I recompile:

cd to php dir
rm config.cache
make clean
configure (with options--I keep my known working config parameters in a file for easy copy and paste)
make
make install

I believe this to be safe and good practice (I've done it this way a couple of dozen times, on various platforms)--but if anyone has any suggestions or alarms they wish to sounds, I'm interested to know about them..
