Alright, I'm new at alot of this..and I'm telling you guys that all up front. Here's the deal, I've been very annoyed with people posting comments on webpages/journals of mine anonymously and want to find out who it may be. I already have the IP address, I just want to know what type of software I can download (and downloading for free would be wonderful) to help me figure out who this person is. Any ideas? I'd love to hear them...thanks.

I'm not sure what software you may want, but you can start by getting ALL the information possible from the user:

HTTP_REFERER (where did they come from?)
SERVER_PORT (what port are the connected to?)
REMOTE_PORT (what port are they coming from on their machine?)
HTTP_USER_AGENT (what browser are they using -- and OS)

Take a look at the php.net docs on Predefined Variables (AKA reserved keys), just incase I missed any here. http://www.php.net/manual/en/reserved.variables.php

Sawmill has a great server stats app (not free) with which you can probably find out what colour a user's kitchen sink is (not really, but it gives you LOTS of specs)

i would just ban the user from your site, by making a .htaccess file with the following in it put it in your main web directory.

deny from users_ip

if the users ip isnt static you can put '' for where it changes eg.

deny from 203.*..

would be blocking most users from new zealand
also you can block whole countrys if you like (not suggested people mite get annoyed)

deny from co.nz

would block all of new zealand
