php to view database details

can someone help me.
i am doing a website which uses php to connect to a database. i would like to access data from the database by allowing people to choose items from 3 seperate drop down menus. eg the first box has a list of courses a student is studying. the second has the year and the third has the semester.

when the student chooses the appropriate 3 and hits submit i want the database to display the appropriate modules for that query

i know how to do this using one drop down but how do i link the three to pull up the info?

You'll need to tell us what your database tables are and what fields they contain. Also, which fields are keys and how does each table relate to the next. Or if it's just the one table, list the fields for it.

its from multiple tables. thats where i'm having trouble. i have four tables
Route (course #, Course title)

Year (1, 2, 3, 4) not sure how to define primary key is this table. it also contains no data

semester(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) same as above

Module(Module#, Module title, course#)

so far i have 1 route contains many modules
many routes have many years so i resolved this by 1 route has many route/years and 1 year has many route/years

1 year has many semesters
1 semester has many modules

now i want a front end website that has 3 drop downs. when the user chooses what route, year and semester they are studying and clicks submit i want php to connect to the database and echo back the modules which he can study.

hope you can help. i'm confused with the year and semester tables.

If that is all the fields in all your tables then I would think you are going to struggle. Your tables need to have relationships between themselves.

If you get some data in front of you on paper, organised into ROUTES, YEARS, SEMESTERS and MODULES ask yourself how you can find out the modules for a given route, year and semester. Then, write your code to do exactly what your thought process was.

My guess is that you will need more key fields on the tables.
