I'm a complete newbie to programing in PHP. Could someone tell me some basics, and tell me where I can get some 'good' PHP tutorials?

Also get some PHP4 books.. Search the forum.. Im sure someone has a thread about PHP books..

Also always refer to the Manual.. Thats the biggest Tutorial site of all Tutorial Sites. The PHP manual has every single function that is out with the latest PHP version..

There are also a whole slew of articles on this site for people at various levels of programming expertise. The same could also be send of zend.com, though some of the introductory tutorials do assume that you already know how to program and are just looking to learn PHP.

I recommend the book "PHP and MySQL Web Development" it was that best book ever bought, explains things in simple ways nice and easy to read I got it from amazon for about $40, I also got "Professional PHP4" this book is also helpful although the explainations are very complex most of the time.

Also its helpful to downlaod the php manual theres a windows help file there somewhere just saves you time searching the internet you can get that from php.net.

one of the advantages of php.net is that they give nice clear examples where with the books the functions are used with conjunction of others often meaning you have to search through a page of script to find what you want

Duey said it - great book, and cheap now at amazon. One thing to look out for is that if you install the latest version of PHP, none of the code from this and most books will work until you set register_globals to On in your php.ini file. Or much better, learn to code PHP with register_globals off using $_POST etc. For an explanation look here for example.

Second that. I learned enough to get started with Larry Ullman's PHP for the World Wide Web from Peachpit Press, but as soon as I moved to 4.2, my scripts went 'kerplunk'. I'm still not sure when I'm ever going to get them all updated.....

BTW, the PeachPit books are good for idiots like me, but I've found that the manual and forums like this one are indispensable...and so is Google.
