Cookie Help

If I'm serving my webpage on my own server in order to test it, what would I set the cookies domain to (no domain)? I tried the IP, but that doesn't seem to be working.

try

$SERVER_NAME

so your cookie will look something like this

<?php setcookie( "name", "$name", time()+31536000, "/", "$SERVER_NAME", 0 );
?>

though, i'm almost sure the domain name could be omitted if you wanted to leave it out

Maybe its not the cookie then...

So after the cookie is set :

setcookie("id", "$username", time()+31536000, "/", "$SERVER_NAME", 0);

then this:

$id = $HTTP_COOKIE_VARS["id"];
print ("$id");

should print the value of $username, right?
Because it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

I dont think so. when you wrote setcookie("id" "$username" etc...
id = the name of the cookie
$username = the value the cookie holds

so, you'd have to print $username as opposed to $id

How would I do that? I have to someone get that value from the Cookie first.

The cookie isn't even being sent? I checked IE Cookie Options, and have it prompt me when a cookie is being sent, and it doesn't send me one!?

Ok that function alone sends the cookie right? ($username being a value returned by a form.

Absolutely.

try something like this to test if you're getting the cookie :

 <?php

if ( isset( $username )  ) { echo 

     "<input type=\"text\" class=\"formbox\" size=\"15\" maxlength=\"60\" name=\"username\" value=\"$username\"> "; }
else        

 { echo  "<input type=\"text\" class=\"formbox\" size=\"15\" maxlength=\"60\" name=\"username\" value=\"Name\"> "; }
?>

that'll take whatever is in $username, if anything, and print it into a text box. if $username is empty, it'll print a 'default' text box w/the value of "Name".

This also may be useful, according to these HTTP Headers I sniffed, it seems either the value ($username) or the cookie itself is being deleted:

I tried something like that, I'm deffinetly not getting the cookie. I also checked to make sure $username still contained a value on the page, and it did (<?php print ("$username"); ?>).

Are you setting the cookie in the same document as your form?

I always try to set the cookie, whenever possible, in the document that processes the form data.

What i mean is, in form.php or whatnot, set the cookie(s) and in process.php - check to see if the cookie exists.

I'm fairly lost here as to why you're not receiving the cookie : /

maybe try setting the cookie via the header() function?

header ("Set-Cookie: id=$username; expires=Wed, [ic:ccc]25-Dec-02 12:59:58 GMT; path=/; domain=$SERVER_NAME " );

Though i don't really see where the difference would be in the two ways of setting a cookie. I'm stumped.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Ok, I have a form, it passes data to another page which processes it, (but can't make cookie here because it can't go before its processed :/), which has a invisible form element that holds the username, then goes to another page that creates the cookie with $username, and then fowards them to the main site, which is trying to say "Welcome, $username(or $id, whatever).

have you considered using sessions?

Returned "Not Set".

Is it my server maybe (apache)? Hmmm. Ill look into sessions.

Have you had any more luck w/sessions ? or better yet, did you figure out why you weren't receiving the cookie?

I didn't get the chance to look at sessions yet, although I probably will end up using them for another project. I did figure out (sorta) why I was having problems...It appeared I did get the cookie, BUT for some reason it didnt return $id, so someone from efnet #php, suggested I try another name, and I did, and it returned the value! Don't ask me why it didn't work with $id.
