Root Directory ?

I have PHP and Apache from: http://www.firepages.com.au/ so when I run the Apache thing, and I type in [url]http://localhost,[/url] I find my root directory there, which is /www isn't the root directory what I'm suppose to save my stuff into (like HTDocs). Can someone explain to me if /www could be my root directory ? 😕

Run this script on your server:
<?php
print $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'];
?>

That will tell you what your root directory is 🙂

you'd have to change your httpd.conf under apache to redirect your home directory...

by default the apache home directory is htdocs.. but you can change it easily in httpd.conf..

I'm not just a newbie, I'm also pretty slow. So when you mean run this script on the server, I'm assumming your telling me to open up notepad, while running the PHP thing ?

Sorry, I meant open up notepad, create a new document called say documentroot.php. Paste this into the document:

<?php
print $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'];
?>

Now upload that file onto your server and go to it via your browser, and it will tell you what your server's document root is 🙂

See, the problem is I have to find my HTDoc, which I think is /www. So Do I Save my script in there, since everything we want to view on the internet has to go there? Or can I just save anywhere?

Another problem is that I don't have FTP, so I can't upload it. I'll probably need it for this PHP thing right? 😉

Oh and is HTDoc the same as a Document Root ?

If you are running Apache, go to the directory where Apache is installed, inside should be a directory literally called "HTDocs". That is where your HTML files go and it is your document root.

That is true for the most part, but when I used FoxServ (Windows installation of Apache/MySQL/PHP), the DocumentRoot defaulted to "C:\FoxServ\www". Make sure you check your httpd.conf file to see what DocumentRoot is set to. THAT is your root directory.

Sorry, never learned what a httpd.conf file is. I did find however the /www file, which was NOT in apache, but in PHPDev file itself. :rolleyes:

If this is on your computer get into the Apache folder and find conf your file would be there

When I clicked for conf it just brought me to this place to choose to open.

Open it with notepad or another plain-text viewer. If you don't change anything and it asks you to save changes on exit, DO NOT SAVE. You want this file to stay in plain text format.

I did this...and it was to help me do what ?

I'll probably just totally uninstall PHPDev Fire bundle and get php from www.php.org and apache from an apache website. :rolleyes:
