php make --with-imap problem

I am sure someone has come across this before. I am trying to set up php with the --with-imap option on a linux red hat 7.2 box. When running make it requests the --with-kerberos option also. I rm the config.cache file and start again --with-kerberos.

configure runs fine and when make gets to the linking stage it comes up with the following...

com_err -ldl
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgssapi_krb5
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [libphp4.la] Error 1

I have absolutely no idea where to turn now. Kerberos seems to be intalled on the machine (though i am not sure as I am far from being a linux guru).

Please help.

Did you install the kerberos development package as well? If it isn't on your install cd(s), then check at www.rpmfind.net

To see if you have a particular RPM installed, do rpm -qa | more .

I have just found the problem. Before running the config/make commands I needed to set the following env variable.

export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/kerberos/lib -lkrb5 -lgssapi_krb5 -lpam"

I don't understand it but it works.

LDFLAGS is a environment variable (do echo $LDFLAGS) that tells where to load library information from. To see all the different env. variables, run the "set" command.

If you don't have kerberos in that place, you will really hose your system.

I typed the following
export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/kerberos/lib -lkrb5 -lgssapi_krb5 -lpam"

and now i get this error when ./configure php

checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc -L/usr/kerberos/lib -lkrb5 -lgssapi_krb5 -lpam) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.
[root@u15149661 php-4.3.4]# export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/kerberos/lib -lkrb5 -lgssapi_krb5 -lpam"

Hoe can I get gid of that export LDFLAGS i used?
