Wich linux should a newbie start with

Ok, a bad boy, never tried linux befor :o

So i don't have much knowledge bout it,

what linux would u recommend to a newbie 🙂, to start play around with it.

Head over to www.linuxnewbie.org and look at the "Distro Choice NHF" - it is old, but still fairly accurate.

I like Slackware for simplicity, but if you like having "wizzards" and GUI tools for everything, then I'd go with latest Mandrake or Redhat.

soooo many choises... i alrdy like linux now 😛 and haven't even installed 1 yet 🙂

will check it out, i probaly first go with 1 wich i can install next to windows.

I struggled with RH 7.2 for a few months. Finally got it running and it's pretty stable. Good for testing and dev, but I don't feel it's ready for the main-stream.

Best of luck. It's good to know, but not practical for average user...yet.

Any of the distor's these days are dead easy to get installed

IMO the most 'cute' version is Mandrake although SUSE is also very good

Heh, alienate myself here.

Skip Linus' kernel and just go to BSD. It'll take an extra day or two, but then you'll be a Unix god*... 😃

what is diffenerce between linux and BSD?

found a easy server package called e-smith. who said linux isn't user friendly 🙂

Only problem is when u wanna install extra packages, there isn''t compile software included 🙁 grrrrr, but i can install rpm's 🙂

so just need to find a compiler rpm package 🙂.

Anywayz after a long struggle i succeeded in installing BitchX on the server, and started to play with it. Have to get used not to be able to use mouse (not installed yet, and not needed so far either :p). Anywayz after playing a bit and pressing every key i had this Ctrl Z thing... what is it exactly? it seems to minimize the proces into background?? how can i recall it? i don't supose a hard reboot is the way 😛

Does any1 know a link, to a printable list of these kind of binded key functions? (there is alot of documentation, but the package doesn't supply much info bout it.)

Actually, it takes me less time to install and configure Slack than it does Win2k.

As for that BSD comment, I'd probably try it (already did LFS, etc) but I don't think they ported Quake3 or Unreal Tournament to a BSD as a client...
