Creating a file and writing to it in PHP?

Hi
I am having fierce trouble trying to get my final year project going, It involves placing metapost code in a database, retrieving this code from the database, writing this code into a file( onto the UNIX box ) and running a unix command mptojpg on this to convert the file from .mp to .jpg and uploadeing the .jpg!!
My problem is with creating a file in php in which i can write to( into my unix directory ) Anyone got any ideas please

$fp = FOpen ($filename, "w");
FPutS ($fp, $data);
