File listings

I want to be able to list files in a directory without listing the extensions. So for example, if I have files in a directory that are:

good.php
night.php
bad.php
night.php

It woud then list them on a page as:
good
night
bad
night

Plus I would want them to be hyperlinked so that when clicked on, they would go to the file. So if they click on the hyperlink

good,
then it would go to good.html

Is that even possible?

you could pass the file names into a string function, trim the ending, then display a link of the newly shortened file name.

I'd use strrpos() and substr(), because files like foo.bar.ext are really numerous and rather common on the Net.

But still, I think you'd still just want the bit before the first "." which is exactly what my script does.

Extension isn't the part after the first dot, it's the part after the last one. (And, BTW, consider ".htaccess" - I wouldn't count it as extension)

Try first to extract the file name without the extention.

Like this
$filename="Some.filename.php";
$fileshortname=substr($filename,0,strrpos($filename,"."));

   #Echo the shortname in the list
      echo $fileshortname;

  //and when it comes to link to the html page
  //do something like 
   href="<?=$fileshortname?>.html"
