Cutting a variable value

hello,
I have a variable called $folder in which I put the value of the current path. Example:
/var/www/folder1/folder2/folder3/
I need a script able to "cut" the last folder for allowing users go one level up (like doing cd.. )

At the end of this cut value of $folder should be
/var/www/folder1/folder2/

Ideas??

$aLvls = explode("/","/path1/path2/path3/")

then use the array index to sail up & down 🙂

/var/www/folder1/folder2/folder3/
/var/www/folder1/folder2
