I have scanned through posts, and read a few articles (I just finally created an account here), and I've been wondering: Does everyone just use PHPmyAdmin to do pretty much everything? And if not, what are some good tools to access and manage mySQL db's? I have been using the cli program that comes with mySQL (mysql), and while I enjoy cli life, I also enjoy the benefits of a good GUI interface/IDE. I am used to the tools that come with OEM (Oracle) or TOAD, but the one GUI tool that comes with mySQL (mySQL Manager) is quite inept. In fact, it's horrid. (by-the-way, for this project, I am using PHP/mySQL/Apache on win32). I haven't delved into using PHPmyAdmin yet, and I will a soon as I can, but I would like to know what else might be out there?

If you can connect directly to the MySQL server (i.e. not Yahoo's) there are several decent tools out there and one outstanding one. check out MySQL Front. The project is currently on hiatus, but the latest release is excellent.

I use phpMyAdmin about 99% of the time... and the CLI for times when I need to get dirty. phpMyAdmin is a pretty impressive GUI, and the nice thing is it's webbased (manage your MySQL DBs anywhere). There have only been a few isolated cases when I had to use the CLI because phpMyAdmin couldn't do what I wanted.

I use mySQL Control Center (myCC). It's free (GNU licence) and available from www.mysql.com. You need to use a mySQL id that has been GRANTed access from remote nodes to do this. I have not used PHPmyAdmin but my guess is that it runs at the server end so in many cases it can access mySQL databases with an id on localhost where "local" means the server. This means you can get in without as much Grant access, but it could also leave a gaping hole in your security if it is not set up with care.
