just posting a thread to say hello to everyone. new to the posting but been perusing phpbuilder for a while. i run a couple different sites that run php and a combo of oracle and/or mysql (two examples of my 'work': my work site and my personal site). yay!

Re: not billing enough hours for clients - just out of interest, what are the rates for php in the states? And is the IT sector over there as pants as it is in the UK at the moment?

Pants - rubbish. Its an English phrase thats been popular in recent years.

It's not only been pants, it's been downright underwear! Hopefully, things will pick up again soon. There just isn't much faith in the IT market right now, with the downfall of so many dot.com's

on the rates subject :I can only speak about france (\me waves good bye to his LA flat 🙁) but I normally bill around 50 Euros/hour for websites coding and around 125 Euros/hour for web based corporate applications. somewhere between the 2 when I have to design the site (graphical design)

I know I am lucky but I only take a few projects for I work on a web based game and a CRM...

Interesting. In England the rates for PHP contractors seem to vary between £15 and £30 an hour.

The worst thing is, i went to a conference recently where a speaker predicted that for 2003, the rates would stay pretty similar.

Also, i do a lot of sales and marketing for my business, and most people have a very negative view of businesses offering web design/development services. I think there must have been some real cowboys previously who have given the trade a bad reputation.

LOL... I love when people make such prediction. I predict that the weather next year will be very similar to this year. There will be some rain, some sunshine, and occasional clouds. And yes, we may have some snow, too. I know, I know. I'm the great prognosticator!

I wonder how much that speaker was being paid?

Seriously, though... I have to agree -- I don't think we'll ever see drastic change like we did back in the dot.com days. People are going to be too wary for that. But we will rebuild. Computers are now like cars -- a luxury at one time, but now a necessary part of life. We will always need them, and as long as coders are human, we will always get paid to fix the bugs 😃

Yeah i think it was a unique opportunity during the dotcom era. I don't see how people were so gullible to waste so much money.

I hope that more businesses decide that now is the time to really get online and start trying to sell over the net, as that is one of the areas of business we're in!

hell - i just wish i could find some freelance work - nothing i get into ends up panning out - or at least thats the way its been for a while now. very frustrating.
