Windows to Linux

I will be doing development on a Win 98SE or Windows 2000 box and will be hosting on a Linux box.

Can someone assist me in identifying all the things I need to consider when migrating my source code from Windows to Linux?

Assuming same releases of Apache, PHP, and whatever database you are using on both you should be okay.

All you need is a couple of gig free space on your disk to install Linux and get Apache running. You don't even need to repartition if you don't want, Linux can run on a Windows drive (I know RedHat can anyway).

I am looking at a Linux hosted environment.
My site would have Apache, PHP, and MySql running on it.

I understand that I may not have to change my PHP source code significantly(assuming that they are the same versions), but what about some of the configuration files for Apache, MySql, PHP and Linux.

And, how about the directory structures, symbolic links, etc....

Hmmmm.... ???

Very few differences.

One is that you can't use php to send emails in windows unless you have a different email program running at the background. Linux has this program by default.

Another difference is in the file system and "/".

Ive just had a hugh transformation on a e-com site from Linux to a Win32 platform (dont ask me why) . The problem that I had with in this was, connecting to MsSql, and php.ini settings. There was not much need for to change the source code except for connection, queries extra.

The php.ini file, I had to turn on globals and turn down the error reporting a noch or two. Also had to setup the remote connection to MS SQL

Im currently working on the securitiy on the site...to have the globals turn off among others.

So this is more of a visa versa to you question...but Im sure it will help you narrow down your problems that you might occur

be carefull about the include_path:

windows expects a ; as a delimieter

 .\;C:\\path\to\dir;C:\\path\to\dir

linux expects a :

./:/path/to/dir:/path/to/dir

my winXP is very forgiving about \ vs / as it accepts both
