Has anyone tried joining elance in order to get freelance work. I am thinking about it but it seems expensive. Does anyone know of any good sites where you can obtain freelance work?

You can try http://www.noagenciesplease.com - but it seems each project is bid on by about 10,000 other freelancers - and it seems to me that they all quote stubidly low prices - like a tenner for a full content management, database driven e-commerce shop with 2,000 products!

Good luck with getting work from it though.

The Freelancers Network and No Agencies Please are run by the same guys. If you look at the freelance jobs on offer on both sites, you will see that they are exactly the same. In fact, if you click on the jobs on No Agencies Please, you will go to the Freelancers website.

All these sites seem to have 100s of people applying for the same job. Has any one actually won any work on these sites without putting in a very low bid?

Not a chance! The people who post the projects don't have the foresight to realise that someone charging £50 for 2 weeks work is not a serious contender - that's managers for you!
