I hate these little acronyms that get used on forums, but I'd rather learn what they mean than fight a lost battle to get proper English back in use.

Can someone please decipher the following codes?

IMAO
sic
FWIW
UTSL

IMAO = In my *** opinion (usually it's IMHO - in my humble opinion)

sic = I'm not sure I've seen this, so I can only guess that it's used as it is in the real world - when quoting someone else and they've misspoken or used incorrect grammar, you include [sic] as a "I meant to do that" sort of thing.

FWIW = For what it's worth...

UTSL = "Use the source, Luke" - i.e., check the manual or a reference source before asking a dumb question 😃

BTW = by the way
KWIM = know what I mean
JK = just kidding
GMTA = great minds think alike
IIRC = if I remember correctly
AFAIK = as far as I know

You have a point---this is not English. What is oft-spoken around here is various dialects of "hackish" with a little IRC-chat thrown in for good measure. It might not hurt to read up a bit: PHP is not the only language one needs to know around here. Don't think I'm flaming you...it burns me also to see improper speling, bad cApitIlaZtion, and of course a lack or uh maybe a total like um absence of punctation in a sentence that might just might go on forever or even longer perhaps than that y'know

In a pinch, go here.

But, better yet, for all who do geeky stuff like PHP*: The Jargon File. This, In My Humble Opinion, is a "must read" for anyone who wants to really understand communication on the Internet.

*no, I don't mean this in a derogatory way. PHP takes brains, courage, and the ability to find, evaluate, read and understand a grand scheme of information. Fortunately it doesn't require a degree in differential calculus..... 😉

Indeed; see geek in the Jargon File (And you had to pick the "all the file in one page" option, didn't you? Great for downloading and storing (as I've found), but really...

I wouldn't say I have a degree in it, but knowing a bit has helped on occasion... Like I say, all's fair in love and programming.

Well, yes, I guess; what I actually did was copy the more specific link that the string "jargon file" produced at Google, the actual file, rather than the 'index' page. Had I been there more recently, I might have remembered how big that was. It's kinda like the full version of the PHP manual --- you hope when you load it that the info you want isn't in the appendix.....

Yes, I'm afraid Elizabeth guessed TMNT correctly. :rolleyes: I had to test for truly wide-ranging pop-culture immersion.

You both did well, but I think Elizabeth takes the Phil award. She missed only LBJ but also gets a half-point deduction for the 9-11 freudian slip in exchanging Twin Towers for Two Towers. 🙂

Any more guesses at LBJ? And while we're at it, can anyone earn a bonus point by answering what a code 10-33 means to a police officer?

Sorry I missed TMNT, but it's not as much a part of who I am since my wife SOLD my copy at a garage sale @ 8 years ago. As to the 10-33---

Standard is "stand by"; but in the DEA and some other forces it's "emergency" or "emergency traffic".

However, that's OT for this thread, so tell me: a blonde or a redhead 🙂? No, nevermind, that generally is "Code W"; Maybe a break for Dunkin'?

Heh heh. Oddly enough, I was sorta blonde as a little kid...but as I grew up my hair turned brown. Does that mean there's hope for me?
