subdomains using symlink()?

Is it possible to use symlink() to have subdomain look alike urls without actually creating subdomains?
For instance:
I have users' folders in mydomain.com/users/username. I'd like users to access their folders using username.mydomain.com. Can this be done?

When you say access, do you mean from the browser or from a php script?

It looks like you want to create some VirtualHost directives in your apache's httpd.conf and create DNS records for the subdomains off of yourdomain.com.

From URL using browsers. Not actually creating folders for subdomains, but to point it to a folder; for example, my username is nysiracer, nysiracer's folder is at mydomain.com/users/nysiracer. Instead of typing http://mydomain.com/users/nysiracer, I want to use http://nysiracer.mydomain.com/, which should point to mydomain.com/users/nysiracer. Since I could only create limited subdomains due to my hosting plan, I can't possibly create a subdomain per user...
I'm just not sure wether this is possible since the dns will have no record, and without creating virtualhost in httpd.conf.

Unfortunately, don't think so.
In order to be able to access user.yourdomain.com you'll need the subdomain 'user' and a VirtualHost with the DocumentRoot set to /users/username.

I see, that's what I thought...
What about without creating a folder mydomain.com/nsiracer, but I (user) can type in mydomain.com/nsiracer and access my folder when my folder is at mydomain.com/users/nsiracer? Just like when people type in php.net/functionName, and it redirects to the document.

of course you need to change the domain name.
also you may want to create subdir's www and one the same name as your domain in case someone types (in my case)
www.postplace.com or just postplace.com and create an index.php to go to the default index page
you could also do some logic control instead
(this works with redhat 8.0, you mileage may vary)
