A-Z and 0-9 characters (2nd chapter)

ok and now if I want to pass value which previously had different than A-Z and 0-9 characters (I just want to extract only A-Z and 0-9 ,everything what is different throw away and pass that part with A-Z and 0-9.
Maybe my English is "difficult"
example:
$i="@#$R$ED@@SD8"
and I pass it as:
$i="REDSD8"

any nice and easy solution?

I think this is concise enough:

$i = preg_replace('/[^0-9A-Z]/', '', $i);
print $i;

is there anywhere i can get the specs on regular expressions?... i'm going to search around but a pointer would be helpful. i know the basics like escaping special chars but i don't know everything about using regular exp's. thx.
