need help determining position in string multipe times

i'm sure this is probably really easy to solve, but sometimes i can't see the forest because of all the trees so bear with me 😉

i have a string that contains anywhere from 179 to 310 characters. inside that string there can 1 or more elements denoted with ^]

i need to be able to parse the string and find the position of each element.

strpos() works great for the first ^] but how do i move from there to the next element?

any pointers or examples would be greatly appreciated! 😃

Huh, sounds interesting. Well, I don't know of a way to only find the positions easily. You can do it yourself by simply iterating through each character in the string and checking to see if it is a ^ followed by a ] (at whatever point you require).

What's more likely is that you want to handle the tags in some form, yes? Take a look at regex (Regular Expressions) which PHP has many functions for ([man]ereg/man and [man]preg_match/man are a good place to start). Regex is the way to handle string parsing and manipulation.

Here's a snippet of a string that I'm working to give some reference.

I'm not as much interested in the ^] element as I am the 7 digits following the ^] element.

This is the code I'm using to find those 7 digits currently.
$pos = strpos($claim,"^]");
$rxn = substr($claim,$pos+2,7);

My quandry is how to parse the entire string in a loop (?) and build an array $rxn of those values. 🙂

preg_match_all("/\\^\\]([0-9]{7})/", $string, $_matches);
$matches = $_matches[1];
for ($i=0; $i<count($matches); $i++) {
	echo "$i: $matches[$i]<br />";
}
