CVS used to maintain a website

Does anybody use CVS (from unix) to manage their website? how do you manage it? We have 4 developers that will be checking out modules and then updating it.. and then checking it back in. Any conflicts with anything like that? One of the guys swears its not a good thing because CVS is for code source (like C/C++) and not for websites.

I think that www.freebsd.org is rebuilt every night via CVS or something similar ... I have no idea how it works, and those guys are pretty close to genuises <genII?> anyway.

You might check out their "docs" team mailing list, or read about it on the site....

We use cvs for web/php stuff. Works fine. You have to be a little careful when adding binary files like images.

And you will probably need to write a little install script to copy the files from the development tree to the actual web server directories.

That could probably be done in PHP and run as a cron task could it not?

Sure as long as you can run php from the command line. We usually use javascript since we also have some non-php projects.

Of course, you would want to make sure that code is properly tagged as being "ready for production". You don't want to put someone's work in progress out on a production site.
