PHP On Apple

I'm getting a new labtop, and it could be an apple. I was wondering if there are a good amount of PHP downloads and Apache downloads for the MacOS. If anyone here has an Apple and does PHP with it, it would be a big help.:rolleyes:

I dont think it comes with it. But ive never had my Own Mac Ever. Maybe ill buy one just to see how good they are.

If it doesnt come with it. There are plenty of Downloads For the Mac with PHP im pretty sure Mysql and Apache

There however isnt from my knowledge a Pack That has all 4. Apache, PHP, Mysql PHPMyAdmin(For you lazy sods or people just starting out)

I only got the pack as a recommendation, I'd rather not.

If their are downloads for the Mac, I'm going for the mac as a labtop!

OS X is based on Darwin (a derivitive of BSD) so most of the things that run on BSD will run on OS X.

Apache and PHP comes with Mac OS X as standard, installed and ready to run. And if you want to install MySQL, Marc Liyanage has made it easy for you here: http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/

I run a Mac OS X server with Apache, PHP and MySQL as my development server at work, and it works beautifully.

yes, I heard mac's are really easy to use, and very realible for common things, but what if I want to do un-common things like harder programming languages?

If there is a solution to this, I'm out shopping for an Apple 😃

Oh, and why do you need MYSQL again? I thought you only needed PHP/Apache. Sorry if this sounds stupid but I jsut downloaded a PHPBundle that came with everything so I don't really know.

Just to agree with everyone, Mac OSX comes with apache and PHP. MySQL is a one click install. It's really easy to get up and going.

I just bought an 867 Mhz laptop. It's the best computer I've ever used or bought. It's great for development as well. I do JAVA and PHP.

What other laguages are you interested in? You may want to check out this page.

I'm glad, I'll probably switch to Apple. They can network internet service with a PC right?

Most Apple users are one-sided, but you sound truthful...thanks.

As for the Labtop you bought, is it a G3? And are G3's fast compared to Athlon's or Intel P series?

The laptop I bought is a G4 Powerbook.

I've never had the chance to use one of the current G3 iBooks, but I hear they are pretty speedy, unless you're doing lots of CPU intensive stuff (rendering etc...).

I couldn't make a comparison to a PC laptop. My partner just got a top end vaio, and my 867Mhz G4 seems pretty comparable. I also run Virtual PC when I need to test stuff out on XP. Sluggish at best, but useable for testing web sites.

The only thing that is noticably slower in Internet Explorer. It renders slow compared to a PC.

Yes, all Macs I've come across lately, running OS X is a lot slower than PCs when you do anything at all, including web browsing, using Dreamweaver and such.

Not to mention Flash! Flash is extremely slow both authoring and playing, on Macs.

Just a note of warning...

MySQL is a database server and will come in handy when you want to develop PHP applications using a database.

Sluggish and slow? We have a majority of different opinions. Maybe I should just go safe with the Dell. :rolleyes:

Yes, I have to say that if I were buying a new laptop to do web development I would go with a PC. You can install PHP, mySQL and Apache just fine on it (I run it all under XP) or get one that will install Linux and run that.

In MY OPINION, macs are too darn slow to do any serious work on. The GUI is nice, the system is cool, but man, Flash never goes faster than 12 fps...

I have to disagree with MungoBBQ . I've been running os X on my rev b iMac- 196 megs of ram/4 gig for almost a year now.
It's chokes rarely, but it also just meets the basic minimum requirements.

I also have 2 win boxes and a linux box. As far as development goes, I have moved EVERTHING to the X box. It is just such a joy to work on. I edit in bbEdit lite and love every minute.

Thinking about selling win and linux boxes to get an xServe.
It's that good.

See I just don't want to do internet development on the iBook, I need it too:
1.Play DVD's
2.Play Music
3.Games on internet or CD
4.FLASH 5 or any other FLASH
5.Homework
6.PHP
7.HTML
8.Other begginner programs in the future
9.Everyday Stuff
10.Lots of internet

Now that I've narrowed it down, it should make it easier. Would I fair better with a Mac or PC?

I know this is un-ralated to PHP, but still, it started off related 😃

If you want to play games as stated in number 3 don't go with Mac. If you were going to use it strictly as a workstation I would suggest the Mac Powerbook G4 and OS X, or any PC loaded with Linux (RedHat 8 has a pretty interface).

i would have to say that i have a powermac g4 at work, i do alot of graphic design(rendering of graphics) in photoshop, etc...with file sizes in the upwards of 1-2 gigs a file, this has been tried on a pc and has crippled them, they just don't have the processor power, they have the speed, but not the long standing stable power that a mac has, if you will be working with stuff like that i would never use a pc, i like macs more all around unless you are a serious gamer, pc's are still tops in that market, for now

I'd also like to point out that the free development tools that come with MacOS X are second to none. The IDE is excellent and the interface builder is first class.

lol, I'm looking into the iBook, and no I'm not a serious gamer. I play hockey games and that's about it. :rolleyes:
