not understanding sessions

so basically sessions hold variables.. right?
and im not really sure of to start them. being just new to php i dont relly understand how to use them.. ive reat tutorials but am still lost.

im passing variabls throught a switch($whatcase) statement but it seems that php doesnt pass the variables.. can anybody help or direct me to a intuative learning example.
